Canadian Blood Services Lunch and Blood Donation
January 18 @ 11:30 am - 2:00 pm
Hi Club Member, I am Glen Cook, your Membership Coordinator and a life-long blood/plasma donor.
I am proposing that the Club start a new social / community service event – group lunch followed by a whole blood donation once per quarter at Canadian Blood Services at Eau Claire.
Why – Canada needs more blood donors to meet the national demand for whole blood, blood products and plasma and, as a regular donor, I am always trying to recruit more donors. About 50% of the population are eligible to donate but only less than 2 % do. Of this 2%, over 90% are regular repeat donors like me. When Canadian Blood Services do surveys, the most frequent answer to “why don’t you donate?” is “nobody asked me to.” Now you have been asked!
My proposal is that we meet on the 3rd Thursday of each calendar quarter for lunch at a nearby restaurant then go to donate whole blood.
I have arbitrarily chosen 11 am on the 3rd Thursday of January, April, July and October for this activity. For our first event I’ve reserved a table at Eau Claire Joeys on Thursday, January 18th at 11:30 for lunch with blood donations starting at 1:00 pm.
There is FREE underground parking at Eau Claire with entrance off 3rd Street SW. I will lead us to the Canadian Blood Services (CBS) reception desk at Eau Claire after lunch.
The whole donation process includes an on-line pre-donation questionnaire which can be done before you leave home or when you arrive at the clinic. It asks about general health, medications you take, out of county travel, etc.
Once you arrive at the Canadian Blood Services (CBS) donation clinic, currently on the 2nd level of the Eau Claire Mall, there is screening interview including ID check, finger prick hemoglobin level check, & weigh in. This is followed by the actual donation via a needle from a vein in your arm (about 10 minutes or less) and short rest, drink, snack and talk some more.
For those of you still working for a living, most employers will contribute an hour off with pay, just ask your boss. Many firms already participate in the CBS Partners for Life program.
Please register with me (Glen Cook) at firstname.lastname@example.org AND with Canadian Blood Services at www.blood.ca no later than Monday January 15th.
